lansing comming and going

im wondering when jim lansing came and went from altec.. my reason for this question is that a friend gave me a set of lansing speakers. he assumed these were altec lansing tho the box just barely says lansing on them. the label is torn on the are of model number. i removed the driver, after many many flat head screws, to find a pristine 130a in it. it doesnt say jbl its kinda blue in color and only says lansing. upon closer inspection of the boxes, they are corner loaded folded horns, with what i think is a 375 horn driver in it. anyone have any info? pretty good friend huh? free! just becouse im an altec fanatic, as anyone who comes into my living room could tell...lol nonetheless these cabs took alot of work to build and after restoration ill let everyone know how they sound

I'm not a JBL officiando by any means, but it sounds like you might have an early model 32 or 33 corner cabinet.

I think stuff from that era is often referred to as "signature series", but it's JBL thru and thru as you describe it.

Do some sifting thru the JBL library at the LH website and you'll likely find exactly what you have there.

If it's really a FOLDED corner horn, the only JBL speaker of that type I'm aware of is the Hartsfield. I'm not sure what the time period was that JBL had the plans for that available, but my hunch is that the speaker is a home brew Hartsfield--home brew because of the 130a.

Okay- Lansing existed prior to the merger, obviously NOT what you have.

As I understand it after leaving Altec he attempted to use the name "Lansing" again. Altec sued, as they owned Lansing now.

The answer was the "Jim Lansing" signature series, since no one but you can own your name theoretically.

Sounds like what you have is from that period when he tried to use the name again.

BTW Altec has manufactured speakers, not the model you have, with just the Lansing name.

Valhallax, Jim Lansing began Lansing Manufacturing Company in 1927. It was acquired in 1941 and became Altec Lansing Corporation. Jim Lansing stayed on as a vice president until mid 1946. After leaving Altec, he soon founded the company that would become JBL. He died in late 1949.

The JBL 130A driver began production in 1947, and was built for about three decades. It is possible to pin down the date within a year or so, but I would have to see pictures, including one of any label with a serial number. It sounds as though you may have a pair of C34 enclosures; here is a link to a mid 1950s JBL catalog page:

you were right steve ..they are indeed c-34's. one had a burlap sack for a grill cloth, the other as you can see is in fairly good condition.

i found a website with a timeline of altec that verifies the 1949 date, i wasnt doubting you..i thought it was curious as to jim lansings demise and the fact that the author stated near the end of the timeline that the 604 was cancelled in 2005..to no one's dismayweb pagec-34130-ac-34 w/o grill clothc-34 w/o speaker baffle

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Tell that to Walter Taylor....Past owner of Bully Hill Wines in Upstate NY. The Taylor family sold their buisness Taylor wines to CocaCola some time ago (I think Coke sold it about 10 years...I don't know who owns it now). But Walter Taylor still owned Bully Hill and would put his name on every label. Coke sued him saying they owned the Taylor name and he couldn't use HIS name on the wine. Coke won. Not sure if they still do this..but for years the label would contain have what looked like a magic marker rub-out of where Walter Taylor name was. Kinda funny.
